Transcriber Toolbox: Step 2 - Preparing your resume
Step 2:
The next step is to prepare your resume for applying to different transcription sites. Your resume is often the first point of contact between you and a potential client or employer. Your resume should be short, yet provide enough information to adequately describe your experience and skills.
Most of the time a one-page resume will be sufficient. It should include information under the following headings:
OBJECTIVE: One line describing the type of position you are seeking.
SUMMARY: 3 to 4 bullet points summing up the highlights of your resume.
EDUCATION: If you have taken courses related to transcription, you can list them or just leave out the education if you have no formal training in the transcription field.
EXPERIENCE: any transcription experience you have should be listed here. The more experience you have the better.
ACTIVITIES/AWARDS: Outside activities help show your community service and achievements.
PERSONAL QUALITIES: 3 to 4 bullet points to list qualities you think make you a perfect candidate for transcription positions.
Some online transcription companies prefer an inquiry or introductory email when contacting them regarding open positions. This does not have to be lengthy but should be pretty straightforward and to the point. Here’s an example inquiry email:
Hello,
I am interested in the transcription position as a general contractor.
I can transcribe a 20-minute file in approximately 45 minutes. I have a fully equipped home office, Windows XP with Microsoft Office Suite 2007, Express Scribe, foot pedal, headset and a high speed Internet connection. I have excellent listening and transcription skills. I am also an excellent proofreader. I would enjoy this opportunity and can provide fast, reliable service.
I hope to hear from you soon. I am very easy to reach and am available to work any hours I’m needed.
I have attached my resume for your review.

Your Name
With a little revision, the above email can also be used as a cover letter when sending your resume to prospective clients.
